Rome is unique in its containing two other sovereign entities. One is the Holy See, the political and religious entity that governs the territory of the Vatican City (a de facto enclave since 1870, officially recognised as such in 1929), as well as claiming extraterritorial rights over a few other palaces and churches, mostly in the city centre; indeed, Rome hosts foreign embassies to both Italy and the Holy See. The other entity is the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM), which took refuge in Rome in 1834 after having lost Malta to Napoleon in 1798, and ... claims no territory (leading to disputes over its actual sovereign status); SMOM too owns extraterritorial palaces in central Rome.
It was once said that all roads lead to Rome. Even in the 21st century, that is true. Attempting to write about the city is almost fruitless. It is so enormous and there is such a multitude of things to do in Rome, that is must be seen to be fully comprehended. And even then, it will take days to get even a small glimpse into the past of one of the benchmarks of Western Civilization. A symbol of corruption and epic brutality, of great beauty and unmatched opulence, few cities rival Rome in terms of grandeur or of historical import.
By 1832 settlers are commonplace in the area of Rome. Two land lotteries that year divide the Cherokee land in North Georgia. Most natives of Rome are familiar with a meeting between Philip Hemphill, Daniel R. Mitchell and Zachariah B. Hargrove and others at a spring in present-day downtown. The name Rome is chosen by lot, and the Georgia legislature creates the city on Dec. 20, 1834.
