built 117 days ago
Octavian, widely known as Augustus, founder of the Roman empire The Great conversion of the Roman Empire came with Constantine the Great. Although he did not actually convert to Christianity, Constantine declared a toleration of all religions and under his rule, Christianity grew exponentially while Paganism came under periodic attacks by both mobs and intellectuals.
During the Roman Empire, Christianity experienced the polarity of both relentless persecution and eventual acceptance and institutionalization. Find out more about the evolution of such events, and get insight into the historical context under which Christianity has evolved.
Under Caesar the Romans conquered Celtic Gaul, and from Claudius onward the Roman empire absorbed parts of the Celtic British Isles. Roman local government of these regions closely mirrored pre-Roman 'tribal' boundaries, and archaeological finds suggest native involvement in local government. Latin was the official language of these regions after the conquests.
There were many reasons for the fall of the Roman Empire. Each one intertwined with the next. Many even blame the introduction ofChristianity for the decline. Christianity made many Roman citizens into pacifists, making it more difficult to defend against the barbarian attackers. Also money used to build churches could have been used to maintain the empire. Although some argue that Christianity may have provided some morals and values for a declining civilization and therefore may have actually prolonged the imperial era.
