The entire 75 issue (plus four annual) run of Rom was written by Bill Mantlo. Mantlo is ... known for his work on Alpha Flight, The Incredible Hulk, Micronauts, and The Spectacular Spider-Man. Sal Buscema was the series' original artist and he pencilled the majority of the series. He also worked with Mantlo on The Incredible Hulk for several years and has had runs as artist on Captain America, The Defenders, Marvel Team-Up, and The Spectacular Spider-Man. He was replaced by Steve Ditko, who co-created Spider-Man and Doctor Strange, in Rom #59. What follows is a summary of the entire series.

The Rom arrived in the United States from Serbia, Russia and Austria-Hungary beginning in the 1880's, part of the larger wave of immigration from southern and eastern Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Primary immigration ended, for the most part, in 1914, with the beginning of the First World War and subsequent tightening of immigration restrictions (Salo and Salo 1986). Many people in this group specialized in coppersmith work, mainly the repair and retinning of industrial equipment used in bakeries, laundries, confectioneries, and other businesses. The Rom, too, developed the fortune-telling business in urban areas.

Upon the Wraiths' defeat, Rom went in search of Galador, which had been moved to an unknown location by the powerful being known as Galactus. He left Brandy Clark, who was in love with him, behind. The humanity not grafted into Rom's armor had been destroyed during Galador's encounter with Galactus. (Rom had returned to Galador briefly after he arrived on Earth.) Thus he thought he could never be human again and their love was doomed.

Rom launched with a comic book by Marvel that actually faired better than the toy. In the comic, Rom's mortal enemies were the Dire Wraiths, nebulous energy beings that could appear as humans. With his energy analyzer, Rom could detect the Wraiths, and with his neutralizer, send them back to the void they came from.

Two subgroups of the Rom, the Kalderash ("coppersmith") and Machwaya ("natives of Machva," a county in Serbia) appear in the photographs in Carlos de Wendler-Funaro's Collection. De Wendler-Funaro identified some, but not all, Kalderash as "Russian Gypsies." Another group he identified as "Russian Gypsies" seem to be the Rusniakuria ("Ruthenians"), who in New York are known as musicians and singers.

Although they have been known by many names, including Gypsies, most Roma generally refer to themselves as Rom or Roma, from the word rom, which means man or people in the Romany language. In Germany, the Roma are called Sinti, while in other countries, Roma may be termed Romanichal, Gitanos, Kalé, or Manush.
