Rollercoaster Tycoon: Games
built 630 days ago
One of the most notable differences from the original game is that RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 features a more robust system for building structures. In the original game(expansion packs only), the player could create large buildings by raising the terrain in blocks and then painting in wall textures, roof tiles, and windows on the cliffs. In RollerCoaster Tycoon 2, the player can create buildings by laying each piece of wall and roof pieces individually. To make constructing buildings easier, the player can lock the position of a wall or roof piece by holding the SHIFT key and moving the mouse up and down to adjust the height. The CTRL key can be held down to lock in the height of a piece. These changes gave the player much greater flexibility when it came to constructing buildings.

[A]t the heart of the RollerCoaster Tycoon games is the sheer sense of fun that you feel when watching your peeps enjoy your park. There's nothing like seeing a peep come off a thrilling coaster and pump his hands in the air while the peep behind him looks nauseous and has to sit down. Then there's the satisfaction of building a hot new ride and seeing the peeps queue up in a huge line, waiting to give it a try. RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 manages to capture some of this, but Frontier ... loses something in the translation from the original games. Gone is the giddy, infectious carnival music that seemed universally present in the first two games. In its place is a rather mellow, almost New Age theme music, and while you can customize the music on all of your rides by importing your favorite tunes, you have to zoom in close to a ride to hear the music.

Initially, RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 was not entirely popular with fans of the first game, as the game engine and interface were the same as RollerCoaster Tycoon, with minor improvements in graphics (e.g. more images for coaster cars, allowing for smoother curves). Like the original game, RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 still uses an isometric perspective. Nevertheless, the game proved successful and attracted more people to the series, revitalizing the older fan base.

The RollerCoaster Tycoon book series was released in 2002, the same year the RollerCoaster Tycoon BoardGame and the RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 computer game were released. The books are based on the computer game and written in an open-ended, Choose Your Own Adventure style with "more than 18 possible outcomes" for each book. A total of 6 books written by different authors were released in the series:

Amazingly, RollerCoaster Tycoon has returned to the number 1 position in the PC games sales chart in the US ! (Source: PC Data, Nov12-Nov18 2000) The recently released Loopy Landscapes expansion pack is at number 6. RollerCoaster Tycoon has been in the top 10 for most of the 20 months since release in March 1999, spending many months at the No.1 spot in 1999 and early 2000, but to have the game back up at No.1 nearly 2 years after release is remarkable.
