Photograph of Flunitrazepam (Rohypnol) under the microscope. Rohypnol is a benzodiazepine sedative-like drug that is a widely prescribed sedative/hypnotic in Europe, but is not licensed for sale in the United States. This drug has gained the reputation as being a "date rape" drug due it its powerful hypnotic effects that induce a sleepy, relaxed, almost drunk feeling that lasts up to eight hours. Nicknamed "roofies", rohypnol has been widely abused and its use now carries heavy penalties. The drug is mildly addictive and has several serious side effects upon withdrawal: headache, muscle pain, hallucinations, and convulsions.
Rohypnol is the brand name for flunitrazepam, a benzodiazepine drug. It is in the same family of medications as Valium and Xanax. But, unlike these other drugs, Rohypnol has never been approved for any medical use in the United States. It is illegal to manufacture, distribute, or possess Rohypnol in this country.
