In the United States, Rohypnol is used widely in Texas where it is popular among high school students. Rohypnol is reported to be readily available in the Miami area, and epidemiologists from that area have stated that it is South Florida's fastest growing drug problem. Additional reports from Miami indicate that the largest and fastest growing groups of Rohypnol users are high school students who take the drug with alcohol or use it after cocaine ingestion. Two common misperceptions about Rohypnol may explain the drug's popularity among young people: first, many erroneously believe that the drug is unadulterated - and therefore "safe" - because it comes in pre sealed bubble packs; second, many mistakenly think its use cannot be detected by urinalysis testing.
Rohypnol is a drug which is a benzodiazepine derivative. It has powerful sedative, anxiolytic, and skeletal muscle relaxant properties. The drug is sometimes abused as a date rape drug. Like other benzodiazepines, rohypnol's pharmacological effects include sedation, muscle relaxation, reduction in anxiety, and prevention of convulsions. However, rohypnol's sedative effects are approximately 7 to 10 times more potent than diazepam. The effects of rohypnol appear approximately 15 to 20 minutes after oral administration, and last for approximately four to six hours.
Rohypnol is inexpensive, ranging from $2 to $3 per pill, and produces a high similar to a strong Quaalude. The drug is actually a sedative related to Valium, but 10 times stronger.. It is often combined with alcohol or other drugs for a quick high. Those who ingest it become extremely relaxed and can lose bodily control, maybe even stop breathing. They appear drunk. Sedation occurs after 10-20 minutes and its effects can last up to eight hours.

According to the Community Epidemiology Work Group (CEWG), reports of Rohypnol use have been declining since recent legislation and its use is very low or nonexistent in the majority of CEWG areas. Cities that are exceptions to this decline in use include Atlanta and New Orleans. Poison control calls involving Rohypnol in combination with other drugs have increased in Atlanta where Rohypnol sells for $5 to $10 per pill. In New Orleans, Rohypnol is common in nightclubs and private rave parties.
Rohypnol can be ingested orally, snorted, or injected. It is often combined with alcohol or used as a remedy for the depression that follows a stimulant high. The effects of Rohypnol begin within 15 to 20 minutes of administration and, depending on the amount ingested, may persist for more than 12 hours. The drug’s metabolic properties are detectable in urine for up to 72 hours after ingestion.

Rohypnol is legally available in more then 60 countries for severe insomnia. It is used in Latin America to sedate surgical patients. U.S. bound travelers used to be permitted to bring a 3 month supply into the country. According to Newsweek, a University of Texas study recently found that 43% of people declaring prescription drugs at one Mexican border were importing roofies. Presumably, they weren't all insomniacs. Recently, the U.S. government banned importation of Rohypnol.
