Rohypnol (Flunitrazepam) is a type of benzodiazepine, a class of drugs that depresses the central nervous system. You may have heard of Valium and Xanax. These are ... benzodiazepines used as sedatives and antianxiety agents. Rohypnol was developed as a sleeping aid. It is also used in therapy settings to relax patients and to get them talking. Rohypnol is manufactured in Europe and Latin American and is sold in many countries around the world.
While Rohypnol is illegal in the United States, it is approved for prescription use in 64 countries. It is an inexpensive drug usually available for less than $5 per tablet. The most common forms of smuggling into the U.S. are through the postal service, delivery services, and by individuals. Reported use of Rohypnol has been more common in Florida and Texas, but its use throughout the U.S. is increasing. WCASA has received reports from students in Wisconsin who state that Rohypnol is available on their campuses.
Rohypnol is available as a .5-milligram and 1-milligram oblong tablet, as well as a 1-milligram per milliliter injectable solution. Hoffman-La Roche phased out the 2-milligram dose tablet from 1996 to 1997, and is currently phasing out the round, white 1-milligram tablet. The licit market for the drug is currently supplied with a 1-milligram dose in an olive green, oblong tablet, imprinted with the number 542. The new tablet includes a dye that, according to Hoffman-La Roche, will be visible if it is slipped into a drink. Reports indicate that Rohypnol is often sold for between $2 and $5 per dosage unit, although it may sell for from $10 to $30 per dosage unit.

Rohypnol Abuse Illicit use of Rohypnol originated in Europe in the 1970s and has increased worldwide since then. However, the substance did not appear in the United States until the early 1990s. In 1992, a South Florida hotline began receiving calls reporting occasional to chronic abuse of the drug. Around the same time, the drug appeared in Texas as well. Today, use of Rohypnol is one of the fastest growing drug problems in both areas. In addition, the drug appears to be spreading across the United States.

Old style Rohypnol tablets Rohypnol is often mixed with beer, to enhance the feeling of drunkenness, and it has been reported to be used in combination with marijuana and cocaine, as well as heroin. Rohypnol is a relatively inexpensive drug, and this has partly led to its popularity. However, it is illegal to possess the drug without prescription or medical explanation. There are multiple forms of the drug on the market. The original tablets, marketed by the pharmaceutical company Hoffman La Roche (see picture on right), look like aspirin and dissolve rapidly in liquid. In response to widespread abuse of this drug, Hoffman La Roche changed the tablets; the new tablets dissolve more slowly and will turn a drink blue.

In the year 1970, illicit use of Rohypnol was reported in Europe. Since then, Rohypnol abuse became widespread, but it was only in the year 1990 that it reached the United States. Rohypnol addiction, since then, became a widespread problem in the United States. It reached many places in the United States, including places like South Florida, Texas, New York, and many more. That time, Rohypnol addiction was considered as one of the fastest-growing drug problems in the United States. Addiction to Rohypnol is not only prevalent with adults, but with teenagers as well.
