In response to the illegal use of Rohypnol, Hoffman-La Roche reformulated the drug to make it more detectable. The pill will turn a light-colored drink bright blue and a darker-colored drink murky. In addition, the pills are ... made with an additive that is not water soluble, causing white specks to float on the top of a drink. However, these measures do not insure protection because some varieties of Rohypnol are "homemade" or come from sources other than Hoffman-La Roche.

NOTE: The manufacturer of Rohypnol has reformulated the drug so that some pills will now release a bright blue dye when immersed in liquid. In dark liquids, it will turn the drink murky. In all drinks, it will cause particles to float to the top of the drink. However, as this drug has been reproduced illegally, these signs will not be present with illicit versions of the drug.

Rohypnol is best known as a date rape drug, though it has gained popularity as a recreational drug. Colorless and odorless, it has been linked to numerous incidents of sexual assault because it is a fast-acting sleeping pill that can be slipped into a drink and leave the victim with little or no memory of the incident. The drug has been changed to leave telltale blue floating particles when mixed with liquids. If you see these in your drink, do not drink it. A prescription sedative/depressant belonging to the Benzodiazepine family of drugs - it is produced worldwide by Hoffman-La Roche, Inc. The generic name for Rohypnol is Flunitrazepam. This drug is not manufactured or approved for use in North America but can be found as a street drug. The drug comes in pill form in .5, 1 and 2 milligram dosages. It is tasteless, colorless and odorless and can be crushed and added to any drink, including water, without detection. In the late 1990's as an answer to Rohypnol's popular use as a date rape drug, the manufacturer voluntarily changed the formula to change color when it comes in contact with liquid, but it is still easy to find in it's original generic formulation. Repeated use of the drug can lead to dependency.

Since February 1999, reformulated Rohypnol tablets, which turn blue in a drink to increase visibility, have been approved and marketed in 20 countries. The old non-colored tablets are still available.... So in response to the reformulated blue tablets, people who intend to commit a sexual assault facilitated by Rohypnol are now serving blue tropical drinks and punches in which the blue dye can be disguised.
