Toronto based Rogers Communication has agreed to buy 34% of the shares of the Rogers / AT&T Wireless Services joint venture Rogers Wireless Communications, of which it already owns 56 %. The price to be paid is US$ 1.4 bn (C$ 1.8 bn), or C$ 36.37 a share, well above the C$ 31 a share it offered and AT&T rejected earlier this year. Rogers Wireless Communications Inc. is the second largest mobile phone operator in Canada, with almost 30 % market share after Bell Mobility, a subsidiary of Bell Canada, with just over 34%. Number three is Telus Corporation of Vancouver with ca. 27 % and Microcell Communications of Montreal with 9%. Rogers announced on September 3rd, that it was considering a bid for Microcell, which is currently trying to fend off a proposed takeover by Telus. This activity could indicate a consolidation on the Canadian mobile phone market, analysts believe.

Rogers Communications Inc. (RCI) opened at 41.74. So far today, the stock has hit a low of 40.57 and a high of 42.50. RCI is now trading at 41.15, down 4.98 (-11.93%). The stock hit its 52 week high of 54.28 in November and set its 52 week low of 26.82 in December. RCI has been generally up for the past year. Rogers Communications shares have been plunging today as three analysts downgraded the stock after a Canadian governmental agency issued new auction rules that will increase competition.
