Former Auckland film director Roger Donaldson has become a respected director in Hollywood. His film career began in New Zealand (to where he had emigrated in 1965, at the age of 19, from Australia) with the disturbing and masterful New Zealand political drama Sleeping Dogs in 1977. Sleeping Dogs, which Donaldson produced and directed, was the first feature film made in New Zealand for 15 years and was the first ever to be shown in American theatres. It was ... a landmark film in that it was Sam Neill's first feature film. Sleeping Dogs was followed by one of New Zealand's most successful films Smash Palace in 1981 (starring the inimitable Bruno Lawrence), for which Donaldson co-wrote the screenplay anddirected. Donaldson was instrumental in setting up the New Zealand Film Commission in 1978.

When Roger Donaldson's first film Sleeping Dogs wrapped in 1977, it was the first film to be made in New Zealand for 15 years and the first to be shown in American theatres. But it was Smash Palace (1981) that enabled him to come to Hollywood where he subsequently directed a string of hits including The Bounty (1984), No Way Out (1987), Cocktail (1988) and The Recruit (2003). Having fallen out with Anthony Hopkins on the set of The Bounty, he has now reunited with him for The World's Fastest Indian, a charming biopic about New Zealander Burt Munro, who set the land-speed world record at Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats in 1967 on his 1920 Indian motorcycle.

Holywood film director Roger Donaldson was born at Ballarat in 1945. From 1963 to 1965 he studied Geology at the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB). Although he described his days at SMB as 'great times', Donaldson took a break from his studies to experience the real world. After working in outback New South Wales he reviewed his career options when realising what a lonely existence a career in geology would be.
