Rodolfo Valentino gilt bis heute als Inbegriff des Latin Lover, der Mann mit dem gewissen Etwas, das man später Sexappeal nennen würde. Der Einwanderer aus Apulien setzte im Kino der zwanziger Jahre Maßstäbe für eine neue Art von Männlichkeit und wurde damit nicht nur zum erotischen Symbol, sondern forderte auch die kollektive Eifersucht amerikanischer Männer heraus. In den Zentren der Filmindustrie hatte Valentino Teil an märchenhaften Aufstiegsmöglichkeiten. Gemeinsam mit seiner Ehefrau, der Tänzerin und Designerin Natacha Rambova, etablierte er einen neuen Leinwandtypus: den romantischen Liebhaber. Ihre gemeinsamen Projekte haben Filmgeschichte gemacht. Um so tiefer war sein Fall: juristische Schwierigkeiten, Unfälle, das Scheitern seiner Ehe, Schulden und Verleumdungen führten zu seinem frühen Ende mit nur 31 Jahren.

Valentino was born Rodolfo Alfonso Raffaello Piero Filiberto Guglielmi in Castellaneta, Italy, to Marie Berthe Gabrielle Barbin (1856 - 1919), who was French, and Giovanni Antonio Giuseppe Fidele Guglielmi (1853-1906), a veterinarian from Castellaneta, Taranto, Italy. He had an older brother, Alberto (1892-1981), a younger sister, Maria, and an older sister Beatrice who died in infancy.
