The library’s collection of more than eight million photographs is managed by the Roddy McDowall Photograph Archive, so named in 1998 after the late actor and Academy governor who was ... an avid photographer. Photographs that were originally intended solely as publicity tools are now recognized as extraordinary art, and many of the still photographers have been acknowledged as unique artists. The majority of the library’s photographs are original black-and-white prints. In addition, there are both black-and-white and color negatives, color slides and transparencies, motion picture film frames, glass negatives and glass slides. The photographs include scene stills from films and portrait or publicity stills of individuals, as well as set reference stills, wardrobe and makeup test photos, research photos, location reference stills, premiere photos, advertising stills, behind-the-scenes production shots, candid and informal photos, images of studios, theaters, cameras, residences and Hollywood landmarks. While there are extensive holdings of photographs in the library’s Core Collection, there are also very large special collections of photographs.

Roddy McDowall always displayed such energy and youthfulness, even well after his years as a child actor were over, that it's hard to believe he was 70 years old when he died. The diagnosis of terminal cancer was made only a few months before his death, so there wasn't much time for his fans to prepare.

To many Roddy McDowall represents the heart of the Apes saga. Playing multiple characters in both the movie series and the TV series McDowall was the one actor that had to be worked into the Apes saga in one way or the other.
