Rocky Mountain National Park preserves some of the Rocky Mountains' most spectacular scenery. Located in the central portion of the state of Colorado the park contains some of the highest peaks in the Rocky Mountains, 150 lakes and 476 miles of creeks and streams including the headwaters of the Colorado River, miles of backcountry trails, and Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved road in the U.S. which reaches 12,183 feet.

Established in 1915, Rocky Mountain National Park became the 10th National Park in the United States. Covering 416 square miles, the Park has over 114 named peaks towering over 10,000 feet, 147 lakes (50 with fish in them) and populations of bear, bighorn sheep, coyote, deer, elk, moose and mountain lion.
Rocky Mountain National Park - Wild Life - Big Horn Sheep Even though there is scenic hiking from your cabin door, you will most likely want to hop in the car for a short drive to the official trailheads in Rocky Mountain National Park. The closest trailheads to McGregor Mountain Lodge are the "Lawn Lake Trailhead" and the "Deer Mountain Trailhead." These are only five minutes away by car. These trailheads take you to wonderful mountain summits. The Lawn Lake trail will follow the Roaring River all the way to Lawn Lake.
This park captures the essense of the Rocky Mountains: towering snowcapped peaks, pristine mountain lakes, tumbling rivers and wildlife around every turn. There are many places to stop and take pictures or choose one of over 355 miles of trails for an invigorating hike. Rocky Mountain National Park is not only a flagship of beauty, but home to a broad variety of animals. Keep your camera ready for elk, deer, coyotes, big horn sheep, marmots and pika. The lucky visitor might glimpse a black bear, mountain lion or golden eagle. In the winter, this area is a weekend get-away to cross country skiers and a great place to snow shoe.
