Rock music comes in many forms, stretching and twisting, dancing through the decades. From Bill Haley and His Comets to Elvis and The Beatles, from rock and roll and folk rock to punk rock and rap, rock music has accompanied youth through its adolescence into adulthood. Today is the birthday of several rockers, including Phil Lesh (66), Mike Love (65), Sly Stone (62), Ry Cooder (59), Terence Trent D'Arby (44), Mark Hoppus (34), Joseph Hahn (29) and Young Buck (25).

Hard rock is a variation of rock and roll music which has its earliest roots in early-1960s garage and psychedelic rock. It is typified by a heavy use of distorted electric guitars, bass guitar and drums. The term “hard rock” is often used as an umbrella term for genres such as punk and grunge in order to distinguish them from the more radio-friendly pop rock genre.
