Rock and roll appeared at a time when racial tensions in the United States were coming to the surface. African Americans were protesting segregation of schools and public facilities. The "separate but equal" doctrine was nominally overturned by the Supreme Court in 1954, and the difficult task of enforcing this new doctrine lay ahead. This new musical form combining elements of white and black music inevitably provoked strong reactions.

The Byrds (L-R): Hillman, McGuinn, Crosby, Clark and Clarke - Wednesday, January 16, 1991 The Byrds, considered the pioneers of "folk rock," were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991. Founding members included McGuinn, Hillman, David Crosby, Gene Clark and Michael Clarke. They are widely remembered for their enduring hits "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "Turn! Turn! Turn!"

In 1859, the Pilgrim Society laid the cornerstone for a canopy over the base of the Rock on the wharf. The canopy, designed by Hammatt Billings, was finished in 1867. In 1880, the Pilgrim Society moved the top of the Rock from its location inside the fancy iron fence in front of Pilgrim Hall Museum and reunited it to the base of the Rock under the Canopy. It was at this time that the date "1620" was cut into the Rock.

The prize is a trip to Disney World for the dedication of the roller coaster on July 29. If anyone wants to enter, they will have to get a copy of the paper as reproductions of the entry form are not allowed. The contest ends July 16.

CLEVELAND, Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman, founding members of The Byrds, have presented a collection highlighting elements of their career to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. The collection will be incorporated into the exhibitions of the museum, which opens in Cleveland in September 1995.
