The University of Rochester (http://www.rochester.edu) is one of the nation's leading private universities. Located in Rochester, N.Y., the University gives students exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary study and close collaboration with faculty through its unique cluster-based curriculum. Highland Park Rochester is at the center of a larger Metropolitan Area which encompasses and extends past Monroe County and includes Genesee County, Livingston County, Ontario County, Orleans County and Wayne County. This area, which is part of the Western New York region, had a population of 1,037,831 people as of the 2000 Census. As of July 1, 2005, this population rose slightly to 1,039,028, making Rochester the third largest city in New York State with a little over 208,000 residents.
Places Rated Almanac released its latest ranking of 379 metropolitan areas and found that Rochester has some of the finest cultural, educational and recreational assets in the country. It was one of only two small metropolitan areas to make the top 10.
On Monday, October 11, 1909, citizens of the Town of Rochester voted 446 to 213 to reorganize as a city of the fifth class. The first city election was held on December 21, 1909, officials were chosen as follows: Mayor, Omar B. Smith; Clerk, Joseph Bibler; Treasurer, Roy Shanks; Councilmen, Perry M Shore, William P. Ross A.L. Denistion, Dr. J.L. Babcock and William Brinkman.

Go to Physics & Astronomy Department January 22, 2007: Assistant Professor John Howell and his Quantum Optics team at the University of Rochester have discovered a way to manipulate a light field while retaining all of the information it carries. A considerable advance in imaging technology, the new method detects subtle changes in an image over time. Using photons and atomic vapor in what is known as imaging with slow light, the new technique precisely slows the image while retaining all of its properties.
The University of Rochester campus is located in upstate New York. Constant expansion and renovation of current and new buildings drove the University to research a system to standardize project management processes and document approval procedures. Currently the University has more than 11 million square feet of space, and is pursuing more than 200,000 square feet of new construction, ongoing renovation, and aggressive plans for growth.
