Only Arron Oberholser, with a 3-under 69, joined Singh and Mediate in shooting in the 60s. Four players, including 2004 champion Phil Mickelson and South Africa's Retief Goosen, were at 2-under 70.

With an angry Woods and several other pursuers giving chase, Mediate understands that the finish line is still in the distance. Thirty-six holes remain until possibly his first win in five years and that reunion with Palmer.

With about half the field done for the day, Lee Westwood and defending champion Retief Goosen were one stroke behind Mediate and Browne. Adam Scott, K.J. Choi, Luke Donald and the 1996 champion Steve Jones finished at 1-under.

The hundreds of items Rocco signed over the winter were gone quickly. As of Friday, they had orders, from all over the country and Japan, for another 300 items, which they won't be able to fill until after the season. Better, they had nearly $14,000 in the scholarship fund, just about enough to cover the $7,000-a-year tuition for two kids.

Despite a bogey at the final hole that left him two shots behind Singh, Mediate was given a hug by Palmer when he walked to the scoring trailer. Mediate finished at 6-under 274, his best finish since he was second at the 2003 Deutsche Bank Championship.

At the fifth, Mediate ran home an eight-foot birdie putt and Calcavecchia bogeyed the hole to complete a two-shot swing. Mediate drained a five-foot birdie at the sixth and when Calcavecchia bogeyed seven, the lead was four.
