Rocco Mediate was on top of his game when he won the Buick Open in 2000. Back problems have hampered him in recent years, but he's healthy again and playing well enough to take the first-round lead Thursday at the Buick Open. Rocco Mediate has won four PGA Tour victories, including the 2000 Buick Open, the 1999 Phoenix Open, 1993 K-Mart Greater Greensboro Open, and the 1991 Doral-Ryder Open. These wins include a come-back after undergoing surgery in 1994 for back problems, which threatened his career. Other victories include the 2000 Wendy's Three-Tour Challenge with Phil Mickelson and Notah Begay, 1999 Pebble Beach Invitational, and the Perrier Paris Open in 1992.

After shooting 7-under-par 65 Thursday, Bateman carded a 2-under 70 to share the lead with Rocco Mediate and Scott Verplank after the morning round at 9-under-par. As of 4:15 p.m., they were passed on the leaderboard by Brett Quigley (11-under through 15) and Jim Furyk (11-under through 14).
