Rocco Mediate: Tee
built 617 days ago
With a five-under-par 65 and two-round total of nine-under 131, a healthy Mediate has outplayed one of the strongest fields of the season. Phil Mickelson, after rounds of 72-68, lagged nine shots back. Tiger Woods, a four-time champion of the event, dumped a tee shot into a lake and trailed by six.
Teeing off early in the third round, Mediate shot a 66, the low round of the day, to finish at 8-under, four strokes behind Tiger Woods. It was Mediate's best score in 15 rounds in The Masters, his lowest in 93 rounds at the majors, and gave him the afternoon tee time he's never had on the final day of a major.
Rocco Mediate When his back went off in the third round at No. 15, Mediate faced a 102-yard, downhill shot to the par-5 green. He had to hit 9-iron. The next day on the back nine, it was worse. The only consolation was that CBS switched away from him after his tee shot found Rae's Creek at the 12th and viewers weren't treated to his 10 in all its glory. He tried an 8-iron off the tee. "I made a really good backswing but as soon as I pushed, my back locked down and it stood me up," Mediate said.

Rocco proved the point in a different way. Even if you are pretty good, getting mad doesn't help. It is just golf. If you want to treat it like work, then go to the office, not the first tee.

Browne and Mediate played before the weather heated up and the course grew dry and brittle. Just behind them, at 2-under, were Lee Westwood, defending champion Retief Goosen and Brandt Jobe. Jobe, who twice got to 4-under before dropping two strokes over the last three holes, was the only player among the top five to tee off in the afternoon.
