Roberto Hernandez was placed on waivers Thursday with the intention of giving him his unconditional release, the AP reports. He was designated for assignment on June 20. The 42-year-old Hernandez went 3-1 with 6.23 ERA in 28 games.

The Indians will likely go ahead and sign Hernandez anyway -- their first-round pick is protected and they're already going to be out a pick for signing David Dellucci. This will give the Mets the Indians' second-round pick and a supplemental first-rounder.
