Roberto Hernandez: Phillies
built 262 days ago
Hernandez, who was given a one-year, $3.5 million contract over the winter, had a 6.23 ERA and 1.88 WHIP in 26 innings for the Indians. He belongs in the National League and he'llprobably head back there now. Maybe the Indians will find someone willing to pick up half his salary. The Mets and Phillies qualify as a couple of possibilities. Jun. 20 - 3:31 pm et
Hernandez went 3-1 with a 6.23 ERA in 28 games. Opposing batters were hitting .308 off him, and the final straw came Tuesday night against the Phillies, when he was sent out to keep the Indians in a one-run ballgame, only to give up three ninth-inning runs.
The Indians will be the ninth big-league team for the 42-year-old Hernandez, who was drafted by the Angels in 1986 and began his career with the White Sox in 1991. He has since played for the Giants (1997), Devil Rays (1998-2000), Royals (2001-02), Braves (2003), Phillies (2004), Mets (2005), Pirates (2006) and the Mets again in the second half of this year, compiling a career record of 64-68 with a 3.32 ERA.
The Mets offered Hernandez arbitration Friday, which means the Indians lost their third round pick in the June draft as compensation. They lost their second round pick to the Phillies last week for signing outfielder David Dellucci to a three-year $11.5 million deal.
