Bill Beck (Robert Stack) is a brilliant and important scientist who concentrates on his work so deeply that he forgets to take care of himself. His wife Julie (Lauren Bacall ) recognizes his importance, and takes care to nurture him so that he can be free to concentrate on his work. Julie learns that she is dying. She does not want her husband to be left alone when she dies. She adopts a child and trains her in how to take care of Bill. The child tries to be helpful, but gets in the way of Bill and his work.

In 1976 R. W. Stack joined the faculty of Plant Pathology at North Dakota State University where he has worked his entire career. For this whole time his appointment has been a 90% research - 10% teaching. During his years at NDSU, Stack has worked with a variety of diseases but especially those affecting wheat, North Dakota's main crop. Prof. Stack is a recognized authority on the common root rot of small grains caused by Cochliobolus sativus. He has authored numerous research papers on this disease as well as technical and popular articles.
