Robert Stack: Deanna Durbin
built 641 days ago
Their influence was clearly felt when Stack attended college at USC, where he took drama courses. He ... excelled at skeet shooting, and ranked highly on the national levels in 1935 and 1936. After graduation, he found himself at Universal Studios, where producer Joe Pasternak offered him a screen test. He broke into the film business opposite popular young actress-singer, Deanna Durbin in “First Love” (1939). The film garnered some controversy over its youthful romance plotline, which involved Stack giving Durbin her first on-screen kiss. Stack became a reliable go-to for Upstanding Young Men in all manner of features, ranging from light comedies to forgettable westerns and war pictures.

Like that of many actors of his generation, Mr. Stack had a career that was bisected by World War II. Before the war he was a supporting performer in lighter fare, perhaps best known for delivering the first screen kiss to the young Deanna Durbin in his debut, ''First Love,'' in 1939. He ... played the Polish aviator whose affair with Carole Lombard provides the comic engine for Ernst Lubitsch's ''To Be or Not to Be'' (1942).
There were two Robert Stacks: the prewar pretty boy and the hardened postwar hero of mostly action movies. Among his films were two celebrated firsts. In his film debut, First Love (1939), Stack (aged 20) gave fresh-faced teenage star Deanna Durbin (aged 18) her first screen kiss. Some years later, he starred in Bwana Devil (1952), the first 3-D feature.
