Robert Smigel: Puppets
built 256 days ago
Robert Smigel's hit/miss ratio is better than damn near any comic writer/performer with a body of work as large as his. (He's got decades of SNL, 10 years of Conan, a season of his own very weird and excellently subversive series, a reasonably decently-selling album and a touring franchise in this damn dog puppet.) And there are still a boatload of ideas he hasn't gotten to yet. The man really is a genius.

As the engineer played the song over and over, trying to get the mix right, Mr. Smigel's satyric delivery stayed crisp. Against the back wall of the studio, the puppet lay on its side, a piece of paper lodged in its maw.

Smigel and Stamatopoulos man the puppets themselves, mainly because no one else will. "Nobody else wants to do it," says Smigel. "I have friends who did the worst jobs in the world and they were here for one day and they're like, 'I'm not gonna do that again, that sucks.'"

As the press rolled in... Mr. Smigel concluded that it was "a good thing for the puppet." But, he said, "I don't like to be the John Hinckley of assault comics."
