Robert Rodriguez was a student at the University of Texas at Austin in 1991 when wrote the script to his first feature film -- while sequestered at a drug research facility as a paid subject in a clinical experiment. That paycheck covered the cost of shooting his film. He planned to make the money back by selling the film to the Mexican home video market.

Robert Rodriguez has a great story. He started off with no money and a love for film. After scraping together every dollar he could to make what he calls a "practice film"; his talent is immediately noticed and awarded with not only awards, but future projects. He is known for huge explosive action and great shoot 'em up scenes. Where there is beer to be drunk and couches to be sat on; Robert Rodriguez will be there. Thank you.

Born the third of ten children in Texas, Robert Rodriguez showed an interest in animation and filmmaking at a young age. He went on to study at the University of Texas, where he met Elizabeth Avellan, who was studying film production, art and architecture, and the two were married in 1990. Together, they formed their own production company called Los Hooligans (named after an award-winning comic strip drawn by Rodriguez that had run daily for three years in the Daily Texan newspaper) and produced an eight-minute short called Bedhead (1991). Robert co-wrote the script with his brother David and directed, while David ... starred in the title role. Sisters Rebecca, Christina and Elizabeth played starring roles, while his wife Elizabeth worked as an animator on the film. Meanwhile, Robert also did his own editing, cinematography and co-wrote the music.

Elizabeth Avellan and Robert Rodriguez were separated long before the Grindhouse production began. Their separation and subsequent divorce were very amicable and they opted to continue as planned, and to produce the film together -- a decision they informed Bob and Harvey Weinstein (co-chairmen of The Weinstein Company, distributor of Grindhouse) about prior to the start of production on Grindhouse. Robert and Elizabeth plan to produce Sin City 2 together -- with Robert directing -- for Dimension Films in the coming months. The hiatus during the production of Grindhouse had nothing to do with Robert's personal life. On April 10, 2006, after shooting for 5 weeks, Robert completed principal photography of the first phase of his segment of Grindhouse. He took a hiatus from shooting to assemble the footage he had already shot and determine his next steps in the production, which is the same successful approach he utilized with Sin City when he shot the film in two parts."

Robert Rodriguez was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, USA. At a very young age he showed an interest in cartooning and filmmaking and devoted all of his time towards developing this fascination. Finally, it paid off, resulting in him in making real movies; and just the first of them - Mariachi, El (1992) - made him the legend of independent, ultra-low budget filmmaking. His further career is a sign for young filmmakers that even the wildest dreams may come true if you are brave enough to follow your own path. Since then, Robert has written, directed, edited, and/or produced around 12 movies (as of 2007), including: Desperado (1995), From Dusk Till Dawn (1996), The Faculty (1998) and Spy Kids (2001).
