Tarantino and Rodriguez Rodriguez married producer Elizabeth Avellan in 1990 and the couple had five children. The two became separated in 2007, amidst rumors of an affair with Grindhouse star Rose McGowan. Though they initially denied an affair, their relationship was later confirmed when they appeared publicly together at the Cannes Film Festival. They announced their engagement on October 11, 2007.

Titled Rebel Without a Crew: or How a 23 year old filmmaker with $7,000 became a Hollywood player. This book is without a doubt one of the best books ever written on film. Right up there with Sidney Lumet's amazing book, Making Movies.
As El Mariachi demonstrated, Rodriguez was a talented filmmaker, and it helped him land a deal with Columbia Pictures. His next project was his first major production. Desperado (1995), another action film, starred Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas. Rodriguez then brought an element of the supernatural to his southwestern-set films with From Dusk to Dawn. The story focuses on two brothers—played by George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino—fighting off vampires while stuck in a small border town. Rodriguez revisited El Mariachi territory with the sequel Once Upon A Time in Mexico (2003).

Rodriguez brought the character of El Mariachi back in Desperado (1995), this time starring Antonio Banderas. He next tried his hand at horror with From Dusk Till Dawn (1996), written by Quentin Tarantino and featuring an all-star cast that included Harvey Keitel, George Clooney and Salma Hayek. The film won a Best Horror Film award from The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy&Horror Films as well as making a respectable showing at the box office.

Mexican-American filmmaker Robert Rodriguez burst upon the independent scene with a miraculous $7000 (shooting cost) action film geared for the Mexican Spanish-language video market. Touted as the cheapest film ever released by a studio, "El Mariachi" (1993) was a galvanizing send-up of Mexican action films, American Westerns and tough anti-hero movies informed by such auteurs as Sergio Leone and Sam Peckinpah. It told the fast-moving story of a mariachi musician who arrives in a Mexican border town at the same time as a hit man....

Avellan and Rodriguez had been married for 16 years and their relationship fizzled while 'Planet Terror' was in production. "This is an extremely painful time for me and my family, and Elizabeth and I very much appreciate your understanding and patience.," Rodriguez had told the crew at the time of the split. The pair insisted that it was an amicable split at that it wouldn't stop their work together with the production company Troublemaker Studios.
