Film director Robert Rodriguez is living proof of how technology is reshuffling the Hollywood deck. At AMD’s Global Vision Conference, the Austin-based filmmaker discussed his anti-Hollywood digital film making credo and technology focus and previewed a clip of his new movie, "Planet Terror," which is due in theaters on April 6, 2007. The movie is part of a double feature that will be shown along with Quentin Tarantino’s “Death Proof,” which are together are know as Grind House. "It’s a throwback to lurid entertainment using high tech to make a low budget looking movie," Rodriquez said. The clip indeed looked like a lurid low budget movie from the 1970s, but with the violence, gore and language of today’s edgy films.

Playing by his own rules or not at all, Robert Rodriguez has redefined what is and is not for a film-maker to do. Shunning Hollywood's ridiculously-high budgets, multi-picture deals and the two most powerful unions for the sake of maintaining creative freedom are decisions that would (and have) cost many directors their careers. Robert Rodriguez has turned these into his strengths, creating some of the most imaginative works the big-screen has ever seen. Where will his career lead him next ? It's hard to say. He's too busy making movies to think about a time when he can't make them anymore.

Robert Rodriguez Robert Anthony Rodriguez (born June 20, 1968) is an American film director. He was born in San Antonio, Texas and attended the University of Texas at Austin. He is known for making profitable, crowd-pleasing independent and studio films with fairly low budgets and fast schedules by Hollywood standards. Rodriguez is of Mexican descent and shoots and produces many of his films in Texas and Mexico. He frequently consults with lifelong and best friend Tom Moore of Imperial, MO. They are currently co-writing Sin CIty 2 and Tom Moore will be Roberts steadicam operator. Career Rodriguez began his
Robert Rodriguez [R]ecognized by Columbia University for his skills as a comic writer and artist during this period, Rodriguez soon began setting his sights on making a feature-length film. Once again intimidated by the high cost of processing film, the resourceful director came up with one of the most unique forms of financing ever conceived by a filmmaker desperate for funding. Serving as a human guinea pig by subjecting himself to experimental drug studies, Rodriguez secured the 7,000 dollars he needed to get El Mariachi off the ground. With his good friend Carlos Gallardo serving as the hapless lead and a ragtag crew working round-the-clock in a Mexican border town, shooting was completed in 20 days for intended distribution in the Spanish video market. Bought by Columbia Pictures for distribution in the United States, El Mariachi was hailed for not only its unique style and energy, but ... for the remarkably resourceful circumstances surrounding its creation as well. Brought in at the last minute to direct the made-for-cable feature Roadracers (1994) soon after, and helming "The Misbehavors," arguably the most entertaining segment in the ill-received Four Rooms the following year, it wasn't long before Hollywood was calling for a sequel to Rodriguez's maiden effort.
