When Bob Nozick entered grad school at Princeton from Columbia in 1959, he was, politically speaking, a run of the mill social democrat. In the same year, another New Yorker, Bruce Goldberg, entered the same Princeton program in philosophy, from the City College of New York. Bob and Bruce had much in common, except that, at that point, Goldberg was an enthusiastic, proselytizing libertarian.

Born in Brooklyn in 1938, Nozick studied analytic philosophy as an undergraduate at Columbia University. Later at Princeton he pursued graduate work in analytic philosophy, a field that tries to understand the relation between linguistic statements and the real-world subjects they define.

By then... Nozick had parted company from the Left. While a graduate student at Princeton in the early 1960s, he worked on a doctoral thesis which obliged him to subject his deepest convictions to rational analysis.
