Robert Montgomery (May 21, 1904 - September 27, 1981) was an American actor and director. Born Henry Montgomery Jr. in Beacon, New York, his early childhood was one of privilege, since his father was President of the New York Rubber Company. When his father died, the family's fortune was gone, and young Robert went to New York City to try his hand at writing and acting. Sharing a stage with George Cukor gave him an in to Hollywood, where, in 1929, he debuted in So This is College. Norma Shearer chose him to star opposite her in Private Lives in 1931, and he became a star.

Robert Montgomery died in 1964, followed by Robbie Murdock a short time later. Robert Montgomery's eldest son, Steven, started working in the shop in 1968. Over the past 30years, the hardware has been extended at the expense of the grocery department, which closed in 1968. A mobile shop was introduced and became, from the agricultural point of view, a very successful addition to the company.

Robert also performs and sings country rags on guitar favoring Sam and Kirk McGee. An Alabama native and graduate of Auburn University, Robert has placed or won in literally dozens of regional and national contests, including the 2004 Old-Time Banjo National championship at Uncle Dave Macon Days in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, one of the premium music contests in the South. Montgomery has also won awards for old-time singing, Appalachian folk singing, mandolin, and guitar. In July 2002 he played on the WSM live radio show Opry Star Spotlight. He plays with a talented group of musicians, playing bluegrass and old-time music.
