While Ardrossan, the Main Line home of the Montgomery Scott family, is mainly furnished with 18th and 19th century antiques and fine art, Robert Montgomery Scott's tastes were more modern. His private rooms at Ardrossan contained many fine examples of modern & contemporary painting, including a self portrait of the noted British artist Sir Augustus John. Mr. Scott's mother, Hope, first met Augustus John in 1930 on a trip to Ireland where he painted the first of several portraits of her, the beginning of an enduring friendship. The self portrait of John is from her collection of works, now dispersed, and is estimated at $20,000-30,000. Other property from Mr. Scott's estate includes a fine work by Raoul Dufy, "Landscape at Langres," estimated at $80,000-120,000; a large abstract by Warren Rohrer entitled "Continual Shift: Winter White" ($5,000-8,000); and "Lantern 1994" by the Philadelphia artist Bill Scott, whose name has been very much on the ascent in contemporary art circles.
