This episode of Robert Montgomery Presents, entitled HARVEST, aired in the early fifties. Although Dorothy Gish and Ed Begley star as a farming couple, James Dean provides memorable support as the last of three sons, who will soon be leaving the farm as did his older brothers. The family's small wheat crop fails when a hailstorm appears with no warning. Dean as Paul has a crush on a wealthy girl - a summertime romance - and imagines he wants to marry her. His eyes are soon opened when he visits her on her own turf and he joins the Navy. It takes the death of the 99-year-old grandfather to bring all three sons home for Thanksgiving and the middle son's realization that he wants to stay rounds out the happy ending.

After the war Montgomery turned to directing as well as acting. His most famous film is Lady in the Lake, in which he experimented with "first-person camera," allowing the camera to serve as the actual eyes of the leading character, Raymond Chandler's private-eye Philip Marlowe (played by Montgomery himself). This film, an experiment in the subjective point of view, stands as a landmark. Montgomery became executive producer-director-advisor to NBC, and created one of television's first anthology series, Robert Montgomery Presents. On stage, he directed The Desperate Hours, earning a Tony Award. Having been active in politics since his early days with SAG, he undertook the prestigious job as media adviser to President Eisenhower, a man he greatly admired.
After a distinguished military career during World War II, Montgomery returned to Hollywood to direct as well as star in many successful movies. He made the transition from the big screen to television with Robert Montgomery Presents, a highly regarded drama he produced, directed, hosted, and sometimes starred in, for seven years. In 1955 he won a Tony award for best director on Broadway for the play, The Desperate Hours.
