Kendrick actually lived three miles up Highway 101 in Malibu Canyon while a student at Pepperdine the one year he played there in 2000. He won the doubles title here in 2001 and 2006 and lost in the semifinals in singles to Amer Delic last year, as well.

Kendrick has apparently been succeeding in that mission. He is one of four professors honored this year by students with the Faculty Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching. At this University, though, Kendrick says being a good teacher is easy.

Today, his college coach and mentor Peter Smith, now the men's coach at USC, will get a chance to watch his former student in the final as Kendrick will face Donald Young. Young, the No. 6 seed, downed Ilia Bozoljac of Serbia-Montenegro, 6-3, 6-4, in the other semifinal.
