Robert Kendrick: Sets
built 256 days ago
After his heart-breaking Wimbledon loss, Kendrick beat 2005 finalist Vince Spadea and Russia's Igor Kunitsyn to reach the Newport final where he suffered a humbling 6-0, 6-0 setback to Scotland's Andy Murray. The northern California native has the opportunity to avenge his first loss of the season when he meets the 17th-seeded Murray in the opening round of the U.S. Open. The match was scheduled to immediately follow the Gael Monfils-Michael Russell match on the Grandstand, but rain has postponed the start of play.

"[Robert Kendrick's] huge erudition and knowledge of the Milanese scene were obvious from his earlier study of Milanese nuns' music, Celestial Sirens. The present book contains an immense amount of information about music in one of Europe's important centres, which has until recently been comparatively neglected. Kendrick's great strength, in this book as elsewhere, is his ability to contextualize the music, to read both text and musical setting in a myriad ways while seeking to relate it to place, time, image, feast-day, and the various stylistic undercurrents that might have shaped it."--Music and Letters

Kendrick will ... play in the doubles final after his noon singles match. He and partner Cecil Mamiit face Isner and Brian Wilson. Kendrick definitely favors the first-to-10 super tiebreaker after splitting sets in doubles.
Kendrick's new-found confidence leads him to attempt a drop shot of his own - not a wise move. The ball barely makes the net let alone gets over it. However, his more bludgeoning groundstrokes are working better now and three winners give him another break point. Another double fault from Murray and this set has all but gone now.

Kendrick got off to a slow start early, losing his serve twice for a 4-0 first-set deficit. He wouldn't lose his serve again in the match, at one point gaining back-to-back aces on his second serve in the second game of the third set.
With Djokovic serving at 4-2, Kendrick lunged for a volley only to fall awkwardly and twist his left knee. After taking a medical timeout, the American continued with strapping to his knee, but could not prevent the Serb from taking the set and forcing a decider.
