Robert Goulet: Sir Lancelot
built 147 days ago
Broadway star Robert Goulet died early Tuesday at age 73 from a rare form of pulmonary fibrosis. Goulet was diagnosed just one month ago and was awaiting a lung transplant. Goulet's greatest claim to fame was starring as Lancelot in the Broadway show Camelot in the '60s, but he's moved in and out of the pop culture spotlight ever since. Young'uns might know Goulet from Will Ferrell's boozy caricature on Saturday Night Live, a series of hilarious ESPN commercials, or his great guest turn on TV Funhouse. Through it all Goulet showed a likeable willingness to make fun of himself. "If you can't laugh at yourself, you're a fool," he said shortly before his death.

Robert Goulet Dies At 73 Goulet was often thought of as Canadian and he did appear on TV north of the border quite often. But he was actually born to Canuck parents in Massachusetts. He grew up singing in Alberta, and became a household name in the Great White North, before finding mass fame on Broadway, belting out tunes as Sir Lancelot in the hit"Camelot" - including the show stopping "If Ever I Would Leave You", which became something of a trademark.

Goulet, whom Variety magazine described as "having the looks and the speaking and singing voice of the ideal Lancelot," seemed assured of a bright future in the musical genre. Judy Garland described him as a living 8 x 10 glossy. Alas, at the time of Camelot, the sort of musical that required Goulet's kind of powerful modulated singing was on the wane.
