Hailed by many critics as one of the most talented and versatile actors of his generation, Robert Downey Jr. seemed for a long time to be primed for a brilliant career. Unfortunately, the promise he displayed onscreen in such films as "Chaplin" (for which he was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar) and "Two Girls and a Guy" was jeopardized offscreen by a continuing drug addiction; in June 1996, the actor was arrested for the first of many times for his drug use, and in August 1999, his problems culminated with a three-year jail sentence for repeated violations of parole.

A role at one time eyed by Tom Cruise, the big-screen's Iron Man will actually arrive in the form of Robert Downey Jr., the Hollywood Reporter reports. In the Marvel Comics character's first feature foray, to be directed by Jon Favreau and to start filming in February, Downey will portray Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist/genius inventor who escapes an abduction by constructing and inhabiting a high-tech suit of armor. Robert Downey, Jr. is suiting up to star in “Iron Man,” a superhero movie based on the Marvel Comics character. Jon Favreau is directing the Paramount Pictures release. Filming is slated to begin in February in Los Angeles.

The film centers on billionaire industrialist Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), who becomes a super hero after a near-death incident. After Stark creates a life support suit to keep himself alive, he decides to use the technology in his Iron Man armor to fight crime. The movie ... stars Terrence Howard, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges, Hilary Swank and Samuel Jackson.

Downey Jr., who reportedly did eight months of motion-capture work after filming to realistically portray Iron Man's movements, plays the title character in Jon Favreau's take on the Marvel comic.
