A biography of Charlie Chaplin, told in flashback by the elderly Chaplin, played unexpectedly well by Robert Downey Jr. A very good film, relatively balanced, displaying Charlie Chaplin’s creativity, as well as his private life. It shows Charlie Chaplin’s good and bad sides, including his penchant for underage girls.
NEW YORK, Sept. 22, 2004 - Oscar-nominated actor Robert Downey Jr. has signed an exclusive recording contract with the Sony Classical label, it was announced today. His debut recording consists of eight of his own pop ballads, in which he is featured as singer, songwriter and pianist. He ... sings two covers, "Smile" by Charlie Chaplin and "Your Move," the popular song by Yes. The album, not yet titled, will be released on November 23rd.
In 2003, Downey Jr. was one of the prime interviewees in Charlie: The Life and Art of Charles Chaplin, a documentary which ... featured on cinema bigwigs Johnny Depp and Woody Allen. He would go on to star as a hallucination-prone novelist in The Singing Detective later that year, and while the film didn't achieve huge mainstream success, Downey Jr. was praised for holding his own against an all-star cast including Oscar winners Adrien Brody and Mel Gibson. The same could be said for Gothika (2003), the psychological spook-fest that placed him opposite Hollywood heavyweight Halle Berry. In 2004, Downey Jr.'s career will take a rather unique turn -- the young actor is slated to star in the erotic drama Eros, which boasts an unlikely collaboration between directors Steven Soderbergh, Wong Kar-Wai, and Michaelangelo Antonioni.
Robert Downey Jr. Biography Having appeared in several small film roles from an early age, at 20 Robert Downey Jr. joined the cast of Saturday Night Live, but only appeared there for one season. He went on to star in The Pick-up Artist in 1987. The same year, he portrayed the drug-addicted rich boy in Less Than Zero, a role which came close to his later public life. In 1992 Downey starred as Charlie Chaplin in Chaplin, a role which garnered him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. His other films include Only You, Natural Born Killers and lead role as a seventeenth-century doctor in Restoration, a film adaptation of Rose Tremain's novel of the same name.

Over the years, Robert has evolved into the kind of actor who simply cannot be dull on screen. Our recent favorites include his flamboyant alcoholic journalist in “Zodiac,” a conniving addict of the science-fictional designer super-drug “Substance D” in “A Scanner Darkly,” and a likable thief-turned-accidental film star in “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.” Still, it’s possible his best work remains “Chaplin.” It’s just a damn shame that the movie itself is as dull as any major biopic we’ve seen – and we’ve seen a lot. If you’re not a giant film comedy or acting buff, see “Natural Born Killers” instead.
