Robert Conrad (born Conrad Robert Falk or Konrad Robert Falkowski on March 1, 1935 in Chicago, Illinois), is an American film and TV actor and director. He is primarily known for the 1965-1969 television series The Wild Wild West, in which he played the title character, James West. The movie remake starring Will Smith was based on this series, and Conrad was openly critical of the film.

Actor Robert Conrad specialized in playing resourceful tough guys throughout his TV career. He starred in two especially popular TV series, playing special agent James T. West in The Wild Wild West (1965-70) and flying ace 'Pappy' Boyington in the World War II series Baa Baa Black Sheep (1976-77). The Wild Wild West stayed in reruns for years, with Conrad as a 19th-century James Bond-style secret agent serving at the pleasure of President U.S. Grant. The series was remade into a 1999 movie starring Will Smith as West.

Robert Conrad was approached by director Barry Sonnenfeld to make a cameo appearance as President Ulysses S. Grant in Wild Wild West. Conrad turned down the offer after reading the script due to poor quality and lack of respect for the original series the movie was based on. (edit)

Actor Robert Ginty nodded, cased the room, and soon relaxed the star of the World War II pilot was "Wild Wild West's" Bob Conrad 0 handsome, compact, but short. Little Bob Conrad certainly wouldn't want a guy Ginty's size working with him. Ginty knew he had no chance here, but stayed anyway and read for the role of goof-up T.J. Wiley. To his surprise, Ginty got the job. Conrad didn't mind the man's height after all, and Pappy Boyington, show technical advisor, and the on-the-spot source for all flying questions, liked Ginty's spirit.

In 2006, Conrad recorded special audio introductions for every episode of the first season of The Wild Wild West for its North American DVD release on June 6. The DVD set ... included one of Conrad's Eveready battery commercials; in his introduction, Conrad stated that he was flattered to be parodied by Carson.
