Robert Byrd: Terms
built 424 days ago
Byrd served six years in the House of Representatives. He did not gain much seniority during that time and, as a member of the minority party, did not enjoy much support from the House leadership. He spent his time working in his Congressional district, getting to know people and learning what issues his constituents favored. During his second term in the House... Byrd was assigned to the Foreign Affairs Committee. As a member of this committee, he traveled overseas for the first time.

Byrd often seems wistful and frail, especially since the death of his wife, Erma, 15 months ago. His hands and voice quaver noticeably, and a January illness alarmed his friends and caused him to miss a vote. Although elected last fall to another six-year term, he clearly is contemplating his career's end.

Byrd's use of the term "nigger," a highly charged and deeply insulting epithet in the U.S. that was used against African-Americans, especially in the American South in the segregation era, created immediate controversy, although he was not challenged by interviewer Snow. "In apologizing, Byrd -- the Senate's senior Democrat -- said the phrase dated back to his childhood."

In his second term in the House, Byrd again turned his attention to education. To embark on his dream of a college education, he enrolled at Morris Harvey College (now the University of Charleston).
