Senator Robert Byrd is the senior United States Senator from the state of West Virginia, and a senior member of the Democratic Party. He assumed his office in 1959, making him currently the longest serving senator, as well as the oldest member of the senate. He serves as President pro tempore of the Senate, placing him third in line to the presidency.

Robert Byrd has the distinction of having held more leadership positions in the U.S. Senate than any other Senator of any party in Senate history. On Tuesday, Sen. Robert Byrd compared Republican tactics on nominees to Adolph Hitler's use of power in Nazi Germany. Byrd, of West Virginia... said that if the GOP were to succeed in preventing Democratic filibusters of Bush's nominees, the move would "incinerate" the rights of all senators. "For the temporary gain of a handful of out-of-the-mainstream judges, some in the Senate are ready to callously incinerate each senator's right of extended debate," Byrd said in remarks on the Senate floor.

Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV) is not happy that the majority party in the Senate is debating on using the U.S. Constitution and senate rules as guide to allow Federal judicial nominees their rightful vote in the full Senate. According to UPI the pompous ex-Klansman is threatening to become a "major presence on the Senate floor if Republicans alter Senate rules to prevent judicial nominations from being blocked by a minority of senators."

Byrd was fourth person in the state (as President [P]ro tempore of the Senate, usually longest serving Senator from majority party) from January 1989 to January 1995, from January 3, 2001 to January 20, 2001 and again from June 2001 to January 2003. After Republicans retook control of the Senate, he became the honorary President "pro tempore emeritus" In 2007, Byrd became President Pro Tempore of the Senate again.
