Robert Bresson: Paintings
built 278 days ago
Robert Bresson Robert Bresson was born at Bromont-Lamothe. Little is known of his early life and the year of his birth, 1901 or 1907 varies depending on the source. He was educated at Lycée Lakanal à Sceaux, Paris, and turned to painting after graduating. [1]
ROBERT Bresson (1901-1999) believed that film was a pure form of intellectual expression. He dubbed theatre "a bastard art", hardly bothered with professional actors and had little time for plot ("a novelist's trick").

In a career that spanned fifty years, Bresson made only 13 feature-length films. This reflects his meticulous approach to the filmmaking process and his non-commercial preoccupations. Difficulty finding funding for his projects was ... a factor.
One of the curious things about Bresson is that he avoided using professional actors. Their ``histrionics'' interfered. He used amateur actors speaking almost in monotone. Emotions, including very deep ones, were conveyed by the succession of images: close-ups of details, telling dolly shots and resetting of the frame to intensify the effect.

BD: Critics struggle to find analogies with Bresson each time a film-maker does something vaguely similar. But Bresson carved out his own path and it would be foolish simply to follow in his footsteps. He broke away from the theatrical tradition of cinema to create films where the sound is quite extraordinary - if you look at Jacques Tati you'll find the same thing, though he's concerned with comedy not tragedy.
