Robert Blake: Killing
built 646 days ago
The strain of jail life was showing its strain on Robert Blake, which became obvious as mid-January, 2003, approached. Blake had been ordered by Thomas Mesereau Jr., one of his attorneys, not to answer questions at the deposition for the civil suit. However on January 15, Blake broke down into tears and begged Mesereau to let him answer questions.
Memphis -- Second-seeded American James Blake withdrew with a sore knee Monday from the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships. Story: Third-seeded German Tommy Haas, the defending champion, advanced in the first round with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Argentine Diego Hartfield. Haas, a two-time defending champ... won in 1999. He beat Andy Roddick in last year's final. Seventh-seeded Jurgen Melzer of Austria had a tough match before beating American John Isner 6-7 (8-10), 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
By the time Blake returned to England in October 1655, the Anglo-Spanish war had broken out. Blake sailed from Portsmouth against the Spaniards in March 1656 with a fleet of 48 ships. He spent a year cruising off the coast of Spain and the eastern Atlantic. The blockade of the port of Cádiz allowed Captain Richard Stayner to capture part of the homeward-bound Spanish plate fleet from the West Indies — said to be worth nearly two million pounds. For the first time in naval history, Blake kept the fleet at sea throughout an entire winter in order to maintain the blockade.
Blake wore a bright orange prison suit to the brief hearing. He leaned forward and squinted when the judge addressed him. He continuously worked his jaw, and Mesereau asked the judge for permission for his client to visit a dentist.
On the stand Thursday, Blake testified that at one point in his life, he became addicted to pain medication and entered a 12-step program. Blake said the tenets of the program stuck with him and he at times lectured Bakley about how she lived her life.
