To many observers, Robert Blake's confrontational nature and admitted substance abuse led to the early demise of the series. Because of his erratic behavior, Blake found subsequent TV work difficult to find. "Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time," the industry seemed to be saying as the doors slammed shut.

Robert Blake In 1975, Blake was cast in the role for which he is best remembered—that of the title character in the cop series Baretta. The gritty drama enjoyed three years on the air, during which Blake earned an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Following the show’s cancellation in 1978, Blake worked sporadically in a slew of TV movies, most notably Of Mice and Men (1981) and Blood Feud (1983).
The trial left Robert Blake with no money and anxious for a Hollywood comeback. He held a raucous news conference outside of the Van Nuys courthouse where he announced, "I used to be a rich man. Right now I couldn't buy spats for a hummingbird."

The preliminary hearing was postponed, at the request of Blake's attorneys, until November. But the actor's lawyers asked the appeals court to force Judge Nash to hold the bail hearing much sooner. They argue that Blake cannot communicate freely with his lawyers because his jailers are monitoring his telephone calls.
