An independent panel of judges comprised of business leaders from the community selected Beatty as both a finalist and a winner. The judging criteria included a thorough assessment of recent Plexus Systems, Inc. financial performance, strategic direction and product innovation, company leadership including personal integrity, values and key employee initiatives, and community involvement.

"I had joined the NROTC in college and had joined the Marines, and after graduation was commissioned as a second lieutenant," Beatty said. Earlier in the bail hearing, Garcia waived his Fifth Amendment right against giving self-incriminating testimony and said he rode away with another WyoTech student, Sean Lawrence, who disposed of Beatty's gun in a wooded area. Troopers later recovered the weapon.

State police charged that Beatty fired a round from a ".38 special" handgun from the doorstep of his apartment at 185 Susan Drive at Hampson's pickup truck as Hampson and a companion fled from a confrontation. The bullet went through the driver's side window.
