Robert Allenby is aiming for an historic fourth Australian PGA title. Brendan James looks at his chances of joining an elite club of past winners and those who stand between him and a special
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - Robert Allenby and Boo Weekley couldn't wait to get back to PGA National, which is somewhat surprising. A year ago, each was poised to win the Honda Classic.

Allenby now plays primarily in the U.S. on the PGA Tour. He earned exempt status for 1999 by finishing 17th at the 1998 Qualifying School. He had a disappointing first season in America, coming 126th on the money list, but came good in 2000 when he won the Shell Houston Open and the Advil Western Open. He claimed another pair of wins the following season. In both of those years he came 16th on the money list. He has not won since but finished in the top 50 each year from 2002-2004.

The mercurial Allenby has all the right credentials to become a major winner at some stage in his career. A feisty competitor, he fought back from injuries sustained in a car crash in 1996 to establish himself on the PGA Tour in America and has notched four wins there to date. He is a fine player on tough courses and in difficult conditions and his recent form, including a top-10 finish at the US Open, suggests that his game is coming together for a big week at Troon. A good effort at the venue back in 1997 bodes well and makes him one of the dark horses for the title.
The 35-year-old Allenby is coming off an eighth-place finish in Hawaii last weekend. A native of Melbourne, Australia, he first played on the tour in 1993. He won twice in both 2000 and 2001 and has earned more than $13.5 million in his career.
Allenby then pared the first extra hole to maintain his astounding unbeaten record of 9-0 in career playoffs. The victory caps a demanding and historic 3 weeks in which Allenby ... captured the Australian Open and Australian PGA. As the first ever "triple crown winner", the resurgent native of Victoria reasserted himself as one of the elite players in the world.
