built 255 days ago
Robert Allenby fired a course record -8 (63), the lowest round of his career, to move into a tie for the lead with Steve Lowery following the second round of the 2002 NEC Invitational. Allenby shot an eagle and five birdies in his round of 63 to take a share of the lead at -10. Allenby's previous best round this year was a 65 at the 2002 Advil Western Open.

Allenby is -9 heading into the weekend, one shot clear of Baddeley. Baddeley set the early pace, firing a 66 before lunch to sit at -8. Allenby started his second round slowly, securing five straight pars, before landing an eagle on the par-5 6th. Birdies on 8 and 10 gave the 2-time champion the outright lead. The break extended to two when Allenby birdied 17, only for him to give that shot back on the last.

Allenby appeared to have the title wrapped up with a birdie on the par-5 15th that moved him to 16 under, two strokes ahead of Price. But the Australian duffed a chip shot just off the green on the next hole, hitting the lip of a bunker. The ball dropped into the bunker, and Allenby settled for bogey.

In February 2001 Robert birdied the first extra hole at Riviera Country Club to win a six man play off for the Nissan Open - extending his play-off record to 7-0. A remarkable record that bears testimony to his talent, determination and self belief.

Allenby used his skills in playing the wind to card the lowest round of the day. His card had six birdies and only one bogey on it. He is scheduled to play for the Isleworth team in the Tavistock Cup on Monday and Tuesday.
"The scorekeeper was trying to be nice to me. Every time I made a birdie, he came up trying to shake my hand," Allenby said. "He was a bit nervous, came up to me on the second hole and said, `Oh, I can't believe I'm scoring for you.'
