After leaving Take That, Robbie Williams immersed himself in the pop lifestyle. This included an affected swagger and an infamous appearance during Oasis's headlining set at Glastonbury in 1995. This led to a highly publicised battle with drug and alcohol addiction, during which he put on nearly 40 pounds (18 kg) and was often seen in public poorly dressed, dirty and unshaven. After a well-publicised fallout with Oasis, Noel Gallagher famously refused to recognise him as anything but "that fat dancer from Take That".

Before his rising as a superstar, Robbie used to hang in 1996 with the Gallagher brothers - Noel and Liam of then-famous Britpop stars Oasis. Robbie expected to get some Noel-written songs so he could start a career. After few months with cocaine-fueled parties, the loud-mouthed brothers showed him the door.

Robbie later wrote a letter to Noel alluding to his record-breaking three-concert stint at Knebworth. "PS: Finding it difficult to find adequate support for the show. What are you doing on the 1st and 2nd? Oh, and the 3rd?," it said.
