The River Thames is a very strong influence on the SE1 area, and indeed the river forms the northern and western boundaries of the postal area. This small section of the site offers plenty of pointers to the vast number of Thames-related websites.

The River Thames is famous throughout the World for its history, its culture and its amazing variety of wildlife, archaeology and scenery. Based upon its size alone, a mere 215 miles long from its source in the Cotswolds through to the estuary at Southend on Sea, it should hardly evoke such great passions.

Marine scientists and animal welfare groups believe that navy sonar may have disoriented the whale that found its way into the River Thames and died. The Royal Navy responded that the HMS Grafton was on the coast, and no other vessel was near enough for its sonar to have affected the whale. But in north Kent, residents reported blasts from Shoeburyness Range, a Ministry of Defence site where QinetiQ was carrying out controlled detonations last week. QinetiQ responded that it didn't operate any sub-water testing at the site that might have affected marine life. A post-mortem exam will include studies of the animal's auditory organs, which might be affected by sonar or loud noises. Examiners will ... look for evidence of a brain parasite that has been known to disorient whales.

The official Xinhua news agency says digging started Friday on a tunnel underneath the Yellow River in the eastern province of Shandong. It is part of a planned $66-billion project that will create a network of canals to divert water, principally from the southern Yangtze River. Building the South-North Water Diversion project, which was approved in 2002, could take 60 years. However, the government says the Yellow River tunnel should be completed in three years. China, especially the northern part, is undergoing a serious water shortage, with 130 cities facing extreme shortages. China supports 21 per cent of the world's population with just seven per cent of its fresh water.

A Royal Commission was appointed in 1882 to look into the state of the River around the Outfalls and this resulted in new treatment methods being introduced at both Beckton and Crossness. This involved the settling out of the solid matter from the sewage effluent and its subsequent disposal at sea.

Opportunities exist for bird watching, painting and extended walks and cycling along The Thames Path, a signed route which extends from the Thames estuary to the river's source in Gloucestershire. The Flood Relief Channel, running to the north of Windsor and completed in 2001 offers additional walks, cycle and horse riding. It has since been named The Jubilee River.
