In a statement Rite Aid said, "Las Vegas was a non-core market for the company that has not been contributing to overall results. The company hasn't opened a new store in the Las Vegas area since 1999."

During the Annual Election Period... known as open enrollment, agents from WellPoint affiliated companies will be on location at specific stores on certain days to answer questions and explain benefit options. The open enrollment period for Medicare beneficiaries begins today and ends Dec. 31, 2007. During this period Medicare eligible individuals can opt to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage or a standalone Part D plan. In addition, Medicare eligible individuals can elect to change from one Medicare Advantage plan to another plan during this period.

Rite Aid's (RAD) interest expense on its debt is about 30-40 cents a share TTM. If you do all of the math, it looks like 2% of sales or more in a low-margin business. How could the company overcome this? Does it not seem unlikely right from the get-go even before this quarter?
