Risperidone is a benzisoxazole antipsychotic, mixed serotonin-dopamine antagonist that binds to 5-HT2-receptors in the CNS and in the periphery with a very high affinity; binds to dopamine-D2 receptors with less affinity. The binding affinity to the dopamine-D2 receptor is 20 times lower than the 5-HT2 affinity. The addition of serotonin antagonism to dopamine antagonism (classic neuroleptic mechanism) is thought to improve negative symptoms of psychoses and reduce the incidence of extrapyramidal side effects.
