Foreign companies such as BP, Toyota, Alcan, Unilever and Rio Tinto had the highest scores in five of the nine sectors that included both U.S. and non-U.S. firms. American companies -- DuPont, General Electric, International Paper and United Parcel Service -- led in the other four sectors. (In the electric power sector, only American companies were analyzed.)

Rio Tinto Alcan has held an interest in CBG since it began operations in 1973. CBG directly employs 2,500 people and is one of the largest bauxite mines in the world and the leading company in Guinea. Since its inception, CBG has been a major contributor to the socio-economic well-being of its operating communities (Kamsar and Sangaredi) in the areas of education, health, potable water, energy, infrastructure and tax revenue.

For 2008 and beyond, Rio Tinto intends to report Rio Tinto Alcan as three separate business units - Bauxite & Alumina, Primary Metal and Engineered Products. The Packaging business unit will be classified for accounting purposes as an asset held for sale. As previously announced on 26 November 2007, the Group is exploring options for the divestment of the Engineered Products business unit taking into account broad stakeholder interests.

In addition to the US$1 million Prize, Rio Tinto Alcan awarded US$15,000 Training Grants to all nine remaining shortlisted organizations for the first time this year. The Grants are awarded with the specific intention of investing in certifiable training and capacity building for the organization.
